Award Winning Author, Lydia Michaels, enters the world of DARK ROMANCE with an unforgettably suspenseful psychological thriller!
IT’S GOING TO HURT…
Callan MacGregor might speak with the eloquence of a Scottish poet, but a hard life has turned him into a merciless killer. With a first-hand account of hell, he trusts nothing and no one but the hollow hurt tortured into his bones. Sacrificing all, he must escape Scotland to survive.
Emery Tanner is captivated—to the point of obsession—by the stunning Scotsman tending bar at the Imperial Hotel. With as many dark secrets as he has scars, she hungers to know every exquisite inch of him, but her shy nature leaves her tongue-tied. Despite her sense that innate kindness rests beneath his savage surface, Callan MacGregor is a man to approach with caution—if not fear.
When tragedy strikes and Emery’s world is shattered, she learns just how ruthless Callan can be. Violence has shaped his soul and love has always led to loss in both their broken lives. But as secrets are exposed, they find truth within the hurt and awaken a desire to become whole once more.

Callan’s teeth clacked with a horrid smack. Precise pain exploded behind his eyes as a fire bloomed under his stinging skin. His face caught the brunt of the assault, flesh splitting and bones throbbing with familiar distress. Thick blood mixed with sweat as rivulets poured down his face. He spit onto the cement floor and waited for his vision to clear as the beast of a man pounding him like raw mince shuffled back to catch his breath. The buffeted sound of the crowd returned, their hungry cries surrounding the makeshift ring from all angles. Callan’s throbbing ears siphoned the droning noise in and out to the rapid tempo of his heart. Womp—womp—womp—womp… His skin pulsed to the beat. His head snapped back. Another blast to the skull. Blood gushed behind his nose, choking off his airway, drenching everything in the metallic flavor of defeat. Tripping over his feet, he forced his knees to bend, rewarded by several knocks to the ribs. Voices collided in a drunken slur of bloodthirsty chants. Launching forward, he dodged a fist and blasted a punch into the tender solar plexus of his assigned enemy. The blood-drenched tape over his knuckles did little to protect his hands, each crushing hit pulverizing his brittle bones and weakening his wrists. At this point, they swung like numb ham hocks. Adrenaline thrummed through his veins. He bunched and bounced like a bobbin on a spool, tethered by a thread to the unknown outcome of the match, prepared for anything—even death. Heart hammering like a bodhrán, he maneuvered closer, blinking through the opaque film of blood and sweat coating his eyes. No time to wipe it away. Even blinking cost him. His head snapped back, jaw vibrating, as pain exploded in his ears. The sharp burst spiked through his brain, blowing open his sinuses, and drilling to the base of his spine—tripping him on thin air. He spit again, never taking his eyes off his opponent. The dank air mixed with the tang of whisky and desperation. Boarded windows kept the moonlight out and a stale scent of abandonment in. Everyone in that deserted mill had something to lose. Or everything to gain. But no one had more riding on this than him. No guarantees. Win, lose. Live, die. So long as the right people got paid, no one gave a **** who got hurt. A hasty lunge and a miss—bad timing on his part. A solid fist to the ribs whacked the wind from his lungs. It was the only warning before a storm rained over him. His opponent pelted him with fists, caving in his chest and hemming him to the line. While he’d always been a notably large man, his rival was ****ing huge. They loved to do this, to cut off his oxygen, hoping he’d black out. If they couldnae get the knockout, they’d go for a collapse. But his ability to take a hit—the sort of hit that would drop an average man—had made him a legend. Stumbling. Battered. Breathless. He let his rival—and the crowd—assume he was done. The roars of excitement echoed every hit as they fell in a flurry. The enemy weakened with each blow, slowed with each swing. Callan gasped through it, wearing his opponent down as he gathered his strength like a tidal wave sucks into the ocean before letting go. The abuse chiseled away the man until only an animal remained. And then… Snap. Like a phoenix of rage, he rose from the ashes. Nimble, with unexpected agility, he drew back, wheezed in a breath of blood and hate, and hurtled forward, rushing his rival and lobbing his ravaged knuckles into his meaty face. When a man had nothing to lose, he’d do anything to win. No longer shackled by strategy, Callan unleashed. His skull throbbed with the beat of his pulse. The bastard tumbled into the crowd, tripping over his own feet, only to get hoisted back into the action. Tasting victory, Callan bared his bloodstained teeth like the devil about to take his prize. Something dark and inhuman shifted inside of him. Limitless. Unredeemable. Hungry. He cleaved into the enemy, throwing haymakers, ballistic and desperate. It’s him or me. A blow cuffed his ear, delivering a stunning swirl of black behind his eyes as the roar muffled. Swarming figures blurred. From the depths of his pain, buried beneath every ache and injustice, he scraped the filthy floor of his soul for every jagged piece of broken determination he could find. He unleashed everything. “He’s done!” “Knock him oot!” Jumbled chaos scattered his thinking like sparks flying from a blowtorch. “Finish him!” A calm stole through him as his civility disintegrated, sinking into the dark abyss of his soul where he dinnae like to dwell. Barbaric determination took savage hold of his actions, demanding he finish this. “MacGregor, destroy that scunner!” His family needed this win. But they also needed him. Gavin’s elfin face wavered in his mind, too gaunt for a boy of ten, but so hopeful. Innis’s beauty shined like a beacon, her ebony waves framing the delicate angles of her ivory face. Incarnate hate for every suffered uncertainty spewed from him in a primal rage. The body beneath him slackened and stopped flinching. “MacGregor, yer gonna murder him!” The hushed shock of the crowd’s alarm penetrated his haze of savage fury, and his arms slowed. When nothing came at him, he staggered back, his heaving sides pumping like a bellow feeds wind to a flame, only the fire in his opponent’s eyes had died. He swayed back, panting and confused, as the world took a moment to spin to a stop. The other man lay bloody and still. Callan’s panic and paranoia churned into a frenzy of doubt, waiting to see him breathe. Balanced on the sharp prick of a needle’s edge, his existence teetered on his opponent’s breath. Though they were enemies in the ring, outside, they were the same.
Unlike the spectators, they came from nothing and would do anything to survive. But if that breath dinnae come, Callan would have to live with that sin for the rest of his life…
Hurt by Lydia Michaels
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
“Hurt” was an extremely intense reading experience, one that has some serious triggers that some may find hard to deal with. This is not going to be for everyone just because of how much it takes out of the reader. Also, there’s a disclaimer at the beginning of this book so please do take notice of this it is there for a reason. So I liked the main characters Callan and Emery (love their names) and thought both their stories were just so heartbreaking. I found this to be not so much a dark romance as the relationship at its centre was relatively sweet in nature. It was all else here apart from this budding potential partnership that was darkness and death, blood and tears, this was where the rot set in colouring the landscape in such violence and brutal shades of black. I sometimes found so much suffering and despair here that I actually felt like there was no end in sight and I really felt there needed to be some sort of balance to counter this. So, this was told in a series of flashbacks so it was almost like two separate stories connected by a common theme. It was extremely well written and so emotive and on that fact, I can not fault this. There were just some little niggles from my camp that stopped it being a full sweep. I liked how Callan was not the classically handsome hero, he had scars both inside and out and they only made him more interesting to me. I also felt that without Emery’s own experiences she might not have accepted Callan’s past fully. As awful as it was it has somehow cemented them together. I also adored the finish it was fitting. One final observation from my camp I would have liked Callan to own his darkness completely with no apologies to anyone. So, this is a dark tale that takes you down to rock bottom, its a story of survival and human resilience but it is also a beautiful love story. Would really love to read the sisters story next.

Taken by Alison Aimes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Book two in this prison planet series and I seriously enjoyed this. We take up with Ava after she disappeared along with the soldier that was protecting her. Well, she finds her self in hell beneath ground and trapped and at the mercy of Hunter Valdus’s. Valdus former resistance fighter sentenced by the council and when he sees Ava amongst the fresh meat sent down to the core he recognises her value and decides to use her as bait to escape this hellhole. So this was super smokin hot and a kind of enemies to lovers story. I say kind of as this is actually rather instalove in nature and they are only at loggerheads for a short while. But you know what sometimes a bit of immediate affection hits that spot and this for me did that rather nicely. This was action filled and I am really looking forward to experiencing Ryker’s story next as he just intrigues me with his bolchy sniping attitude. I was slightly disappointed that the main characters from the first book didn’t make an appearance here, but all else here was good and I am happy to recommend this. Just a heads-up though Ava here is protected by Valdus and his men because of this books setting there are dark elements to this namely the rape of fellow inmates.

Your Deepest Fear by David Jackson
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
So this is a police procedural, it’s actually book four in the series which I didn’t initially realise and as such I do think this would be better served read in order as though I enjoyed this and it was well written the current storyline here is very connected and involved with past events. As I read this myself as a standalone I felt this did affect my overall enjoyment as I felt slightly out of the loop regarding past exposure to certain important key elements. So this was told from various POV but mostly Sara and Cody. After Sara’s husband is tortured and murdered in a particularly gruesome fashion she is determined to bring her husband’s killers to justice. Also, we have DS Nathan Cody on the case but because of past trauma, he is somewhat of a shell of the man he was. These two on the surface seem to have nothing in common but Cody himself senses an affinity in Sara that he can relate and almost understand and just got to say I was in awe of Sara; that lady has some series of brass balls loved her so much even if I was a tad sceptical of her ninja skills. Also, the clown inclusion was well creepy, I am so not a fan of clowns. So this was fast-paced throughout and as I said I did enjoy this to a certain extent.

This was the absolute bomb, I enjoyed this book just so much. I am a relatively new reader of this author after I requested the previous book in this series without realising it was part of an ongoing series. I was that impressed with it that when I read the description for this instalment I just had to get my mitts on it. I actually didn’t think anything could surpass my previous experience here but this managed to surpass it and then some, I am super impressed. There is some previous stuff going on here that maybe it would enhance the whole read if you started at the beginning: but personally, I think there is enough backstory explained here that it’s not hard to catch on I managed to easily and I started at book nine myself. This story focuses on another mystery one that was just so fascinating and is what initially captured my attention and this had so many twists and turns at times I felt absolutely giddy. Set between Hollywood and the UK and spanning 33 years it was hard to see how the two were actually connected. But when the cogs start to click into place here and so seamlessly at that, this was just pure genius. Got to say this was such compelling stuff and a real page-turner of a story. Loved how everything just slotted together the further you went and I could literally feel a veil metaphorically being lifted from my eyes as this played out. This was also deeply moving and rather than just being told a story the author has managed here to transport the reader right into the tapestry of the story. This was a five-star experience all the way and I recommend this series highly.

Paradise Nights Warner and Tromolin: Indecency Suites Novella #6 by Anabella Roscoff
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This is book six in this novella serial and as expected this was another corker of a read. This one features Todd and Tamsin at its centre, she’s a newly single but very rich single mother, ex-stripper and council estate girl: so she certainly knows how to keep it real and he is bored and very restless also considering taking a much-needed break from this high-class world of sex and power. When Tamsin Hires Todd with the sole intention of reclaiming her sexuality through there hot and heavy encounters he himself at last finds a female who interests him beyond the purely superficial. He finds in Tasmin a kindred spirit as she herself understands the job and its pressures and limitations. I also adored how real these two were just being themselves with no pretences between them. This was also incredibly humorous which I found so refreshing. This one was another hot read that I enjoyed a lot.

Little Darlings by Melanie Golding
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Sorry to say I found this one to be a bit of a slog. This was in itself an interesting premise but we didn’t quite click and I also found it a touch slow in places. This did have a creepy undertone but it wasn’t enough of a factor to ultimately rescue this for me. This was told from new mother Lauren’s POV as she struggles with the concept that something is after her twins and then later that they have been switched for changeling’s and are not, in fact, her offspring. I did enjoy the fable or tale at the beginning of each story chapter and found that to be a fun and interesting addition. Laurens husband I detested with a passion what a piece of work he was, his falsely over the top endearments and pretend concerns were such an obvious sham and he couldn’t be trusted as far as you could throw him. I did believe that he did care for his boys despite his selfish nature that I did think was genuine. But as for all else what a waste of space. We also have an unorthodox detective who is prepared to dig for the truth and is surprisingly open-minded to the seemingly impossible. I also wasn’t quite sure what to make of that finish as to me it seemed abrupt and unfinished. This was well written and there’s plenty out there that loved this I am just not one of them. If this hadn’t been an Arc I would probably have thrown in the towel and this would have been sent to my DNF Shelf but because it was I plodded on despite me not being fully invested. As I have said previously there’s nothing wrong with the writing here this just wasn’t for me.

My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I’m slightly conflicted about this one, on the one hand, I adored the idea here it was just so intriguing but the issue I have is the reality for me just didn’t live up to my internal hype. So this was told completely from the husbands POV who I don’t think we ever learn his actual name throughout the whole book here. From him, we are exposed completely to this strange family dynamic and if I am honest I did find him a bit of a wet weekend totally under his manipulative controlling wife’s thumb. He is definitely the subservient submissive one in this bizarre partnership. He seemed to me to be in this more to please his more dominant wife; I also got the impression that she is the one that likes the killing and he just likes the feeling he gets when he pleases his wife. Her response and adoration compared to her usual manner is the ultimate addiction for him. Millicent is the puppet master, shes the one in control and all in her household be it her husband or there two children dance to her tune. The husband himself does sleep and interact with some of they’re potential victims I think from this he gets back a sense of control and this is why he does it. millicent emasculates him so the planning, stalking and sometimes romancing of these women gives him back the sense of control he really is missing in his life and marriage. There was also a weird contrast between family man and predator that I had difficulty wrapping my head around, the two just didn’t equate as he did surprisingly seem to be an excellent father. Millicent, I Had no issues as she came across as quite cold chilling and emotionless. To do what she does and show no outward signs or remorse speaks to me of a lack of basic conscience or an overall sense of morality she was one cold chick. So I was getting a trifle bored but then things did start to heat up around the halfway mark. When the game gets real and both of there secret lives start to impact with there everyday reality affecting them all as a family and also as individuals and as events escalate building momentum along the way, the secrets these two are keeping from each other swiftly escalates as the distrust deepens and each shows there current hand. The second half of this I found to be much better than the first but I did find the ending here and the resolution slightly rushed. I also did appreciate the final few words genius. So yeh mixed bag I think my main issue here is that not much really happens and I was expecting much more, this is more of a psychological endeavour and what makes people tick rather than some action-filled thriller.
I did enjoy this as it was a gripping read just not as much as I initially thought I would.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This is the first book in the Condemned series and I had such a fab time reading this. Sci-Fi romance books are a guilty pleasure of mine add in it being a prison planet and I was sold and this one was certainly a great read. So Bella West crash lands on this penal colony planet along with her fellow researchers and some soldiers sent along to protect them. Making a deal with prisoner 673 her body for protection is the only logical way forward if she wants to survive in this harsh terrain. I appreciated Bella’s determination and resilience to make it whatever the cost and found her to be a pragmatic sort which is a quality of hers I really found myself admiring. Prisoner 673 AKA Convicts humanity is still there despite him burying it so deep and I really enjoyed witnessing the blossoming bond developing between these two. This was actioned packed throughout and had no trouble retaining my individual attention. On a sidenote, I really appreciated that window where we get to jump forward slightly and see where are unlikely lovers ended up. This in itself had quite a feel-good vibe for me and though I had to suspend my disbelief slightly as I don’t think it would be that easy to receive a pardon and come out on top I found myself not really caring that much as I just wanted our twosome to come out on top and win.
This was also set up very nicely for the next story in this series of which I am looking forward to reading.
ARC BOOK REVIEW
Release Date- Genre-Psychological Thriller/Romance
An emotionally gripping romantic thriller, this is a novel of love, marriage, deception and murder.
It’s one thing to discover the man you married is not who you think he is. It’s another thing entirely to prove it. After all, who is going to take the word of an unstable woman who’s never fully recovered from the heartbreak of losing her child?
The only question now, is how far he will go to protect his secrets.
As I lie here in my front hallway, in the place where it all began, I wonder what would have happened if I’d never opened the door that afternoon?
Would she have gone somewhere else? Would she have swept off in another direction, an alternative reality where our lives would never have crossed paths?
And now I’m lying here, blood pooling beneath my body, deep crimson smears on cold white tiles, remembering every sordid moment in vivid detail.
There’s a shadow standing over me.
“I want you to die here, slowly and alone.” Her voice is cold, emotionless. “And I want you to use the time to think about what you did. And when you take your last breath, I want you to realize it’s all your fault. All of it!”
I drift in and out of consciousness and wonder if I had my chance to do it over again, if I had the choice, would I choose not to open the door that day?
Even after everything, I know that I would.
I’d go through it all again, and then some if it meant the chance to be with Zach just one more time…
The Scream Behind Her Smile by Athena Daniels
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was an interesting read and very different from what I was originally expecting here. This had so many actual twists and turns that it managed to capture my attention so effortlessly. It was well written a page-turner that really was addictive reading. Claire as a character I felt for her so much, her backstory in regards to her daughter made my own heart hurt so much. But for sure she certainly was a lousy judge of character. She has surrounded herself with toxic relationships from her so-called friends who have obviously never read the girl code rule book (What Traitors) to her waste of space husband Derek. Derek, himself has managed to isolate Claire manipulating and controlling the situation itself until she really has no way left to turn. Add in that venomous viper Jasmine who was such a piece of work and I was internally screaming put your foot down and issue your waste of space husband an ultimatum they are both taking the mick so badly. So Zach who for me was a surprise addition and what I saw of him I really liked a lot: he was mysterious, sexy and seemed protective of Claire but I did feel his input here was slightly limited and I would have liked to have got more of an insight into how he ticked. I felt this would have been better served being told in dual POV rather than just from Claire’s side of the fence. I really would have liked to explore Zach in more depth rather than just the superficial and felt this one-sided style of narration limited that slightly. We did get a snippet in the epilogue from him but this was really not enough to satisfy me. This was a great read that I enjoyed a lot a thumbs up from me.
I voluntary reviewed a copy of The Scream Behind Her Smile.

“Drop the knife and place your palms against the window.”
She released the weapon against her will. “That’s not necessary,” she growled as her hands touched the glass.
“As you lost, that’s not your decision to make.” He bent to retrieve the dagger. She had no idea what he did with the other but guessed he pocketed it.
“What now?” she groused, awaiting his next wave of compulsion.
“Quid pro quo, angel.” He traced the sharp edge down her spine, hard enough for her to feel without drawing blood. “I bled for you, so you will bleed for me.”
Her eyes widened. “Excuse me?”
“Shh.” He used his opposite hand to gather her hair over one shoulder and kissed the back of her neck. “I’m still deciding where I wish to exact payment, darling. Don’t spoil my fun.”
This is the box set and books 4-6 in the addictive Immortal Curse Series. The page turning ongoing paranormal saga featuring my favourite Hydraian’s and Ichorian’s Each book is an interconnecting ongoing story with a slightly different flavour. Every one of these stories has something unique to offer and I ran the countless of emotions all the way from bursting happiness to the deepest despair. This story arc really touched me down deep and that final instalment here I was actually balling like a baby. Book six closes this current session ready for a new story direction I for one can’t wait as there’s a certain Angel I need to see get here release and ultimately her happiness really need the closure guys.
Highly recommend this series guys it’s a really great experience.
